Rules Rule.

The College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Alberta (CMLTA) is a place where rules rule so all Albertans can trust their medical lab results from Medical Laboratory Technologists.

Saving Lives Rules.

An accurate diagnosis supports your health and the public health. That’s what Medical Laboratory Technologists (MLTs) provide. In fact, results from tests processed by MLTs inform around 85% of all diagnoses and treatment plans in the province.

It’s critical that these test results are correct. We make sure that happens through high standards and regulations.

The CMLTA is here to protect your health.

Confidence in lab results is a literal life saver.

We make public safety public.

Consistency is key. Consistency is key.

Bigger regulations, better outcomes.

Accountability and transparency are vitally
important to the CMLTA. Not just because it
sounds good, but because these are pathways to increased public safety. Anything less than full accountability and transparency isn’t good enough. One way we practice transparency is through our
public register. We list all MLTs in Alberta in the public register, along with their permit/license information.

As a patient, you deserve to feel confident in the accuracy of your medical lab results. The
CMLTA helps make that a reality through strict regulations extending to every Medical Laboratory Technologist throughout Alberta. In other words, wherever our MLTs are present, rules rule.

Look, we get it. In most circles, regulations seem like a challenge. We’re okay with that. Because when it comes to creating the best possible outcomes for patients accessing medical laboratory services provided by MLTs, our rules, rigor and regulations save lives.

Accountability and transparency are only effective if they’re practiced consistently. If our standards are not being upheld, let us know.

In our line of work, rules save lives. Here’s some that guide how MLTs work in Alberta every day.

Rules Rule #1:
Registration Rules

Becoming an MLT requires specific education, a criminal record check, and passing the national MLT exam. If our registration requirements aren’t met, the application is denied.

Rules Rule #2:
Current Practice Rules

MLTs in Alberta need to maintain a certain number of practice hours. That way, all Albertans can trust each MLT is working with the most up-to-date knowledge.

Rules Rule #3:
Continuing Education Rules

All MLTs in Alberta are required to complete an annual learning plan to keep their knowledge and skills current.

Rules Rule #4:
Practice and Behaviour Rules

Every MLT in Alberta needs to stick to the Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics. Each day of their careers is guided by these documents.

If an MLT breaks a CMLTA rule, they can and should receive a complaint. If found guilty, MLTs will face consequences such as practice restrictions or additional education requirements. Some may even lose their license to practice.
